PRESS RELEASE

Monte Carlo, Monaco; March 21, 2009

Hansen Industries North America, Inc. has been awarded Second Place for Excellence in the Field of Environmental Technology Development from The Foundation Prince Albert II de Monaco at CleanEquity Monaco 2009. H.S.H. Prince Albert II, a world leader in environmental action, awarded this prestigious honor at the conclusion of the second annual Environmental Technology Conference, where fifty next generation Cleantech companies from around the world were invited to present to senior members of the world’s environmental, investment, political, media and construction industries.

“We are thrilled to have been awarded this prestigious honor. This establishes our company amongst the top in the global clean technology community and will considerably raise our international profile. It is truly exciting to be in a position to make a difference in the world.” –Steven P. Hansen

Hansen Industries has pioneered the development of a recycled railroad tie produced from waste tire rubber. The Hansen Tie has been subjected to vigorous testing, has the potential to reduce operating cost for railroads, and requires no specialized installation. It also has the potential to eliminate large stockpiles of waste rubber tires, these tire dumps are breeding ground for infectious disease and potential fire hazards. As an alternative to wooden railroad ties, 14.5 million trees can be saved each year in the United States. Shipping freight by rail is the most fuel-efficient method of moving large volumes and weights across the country, further reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

“With the exception of maybe the electric car and the photovoltaic cell, no other product has the potential to make such a large impact on the way we protect the environment. Not only are we eliminating the wasteful dumping of tires into our landfills, we are replacing a wood product with a better, less expensive alternative. We have the potential to save millions of trees, and contribute to the growth of the most fuel efficient, and economical means of shipping freight across our country. This isn’t just a dubious carbon offset; this is real innovation and progress for the “green” industrial revolution.” -Steven P Hansen

Hansen Industries is committed to the development of real environmental solutions that are not only better for the trees, air and the land we share, but also the way business is done. Reduce-Reuse-Recycle

• Traditional ties are treated with creosote for preservation. Creosote is a known carcinogen with so many harmful effects that Congress has banned its use. The single exception is the Railroads because there has not been a viable alternative to creosote-treated wood ties.
• One mature tree only produces two to three wood ties, which means 1,300 trees are cut down to supply every mile of railroad tracks.
• These ties need replacing every 8-15 years, causing the loss of another 1,300 trees to sustain each already-existing mile of track.
• To replace existing ties in 140,000 miles of track in the U.S. it would require cutting down 173 million trees—trees that currently consume millions of tons of CO2.
